Oh! I think I finally understand what QTVR is! (Is it short for Quicktime Virtual Reality?) I just figured out that I can click on the image and turn it around to look in different directions.
Nice. Is there any way to combine some kind of direction indicator with the image? I could imagine this being useful to help students understand the effect of viewing direction, which could help them understand what they’re doing when they use apparent dips to construct cross-sections. (It would be nice to be able to combine the visualization with something quantitative – even something as old-school as the angle between strike and cross-section plane.)
Did you see that the Cutting Edge visualization workshop now has a date and a place? (Feb. 10-12, Arizona State.) There’s also going to be an online workshop about using online games and environments, which sounds like it fits with the stuff you’re developing.
I recently revisited Rainbow Basin for a Geology Field Methods class. We took strike and dips throughout the syncline as well as both limbs. It was an amazing view from the ridge! Perfect weather. My friend and I walked almost the entire syncline but ran out of daylight. I plan to return with my camera and walk and map the entire thing. Fresno State Geology Department was there 4/11/2008 to 4/13/2008
