GSA Denver GeoBlogger Meetup/Dinner?
posted in GSA, Geology, blogging |Two years ago I tried to organize a meetup/geek dinner for geology bloggers at GSA and it failed miserably (no takers). This year I tried to organize a session on Web 2.0 in the Geosciences and it failed, too (only 9 of the required 12 abstracts to constitute a viable session). But hey, I’m a glutton for punishment so why not put out a call for a second attempt at a GSA GeoBlogger meetup/dinner?
I know at least a couple of you are coming to GSA this year, and I’d love to have a chance to meet a bunch of you. If enough of you are interested I’m willing to try to make dinner arrangements (maybe even somewhere with wifi!). So I put the question to the geoblogosphere: Wanna do dinner in Denver? If so, what night works best? Let me know if you’re interested.
UPDATE: I’ve called a couple of places and it looks like our best bet right now for Sunday night (10/28) would be Chili’s Bar and Grill – Denver Downtown location – it’s only about 3 blocks from the Convention Center. They have WIFI but they don’t take reservations. For a group of about 7 of us arriving there at 7:30pm they said the expected wait would be about 15 minutes. So let’s plan to meet up at 7:15 pm at the GSA Bookstore in the Exhibit Hall and we can walk over as a group or choose another venue on the spot, if necessary. Sound good?
Second Update: I’m going to be cutting it close for a 7:15pm meeting – should make it, but if I’m not there by 7:30pm go ahead without me. I’ll try to meet you all at Chilis if I’m late. –Ron
Final Update: We had a great dinner and I had a wonderful time. I’m looking forward to this sort of meetup becoming a regular event at meetings like this. I took a couple of photos of our group, but didn’t have my flash working so they were all severely underexposed. Here’s one that I was able to salvage…

Ron, keep at it…a session like you tried for this year is inevitable…if not next year, very soon. And then within the next 5 years people will wonder why someone didn’t try it sooner. In which case, you can say “I did try! Way back in ‘07″

I’m game, I’m arriving Sunday around 4pm, so after the welcome party should work. Thanks for organizing this! Oh, and hard WOGE, I’ve spent a fair bit of time looking, I had it narrowed down to 3 possible features, looked for all three and can’t seem to find it.

OK, I got someone to proctor exams on the 29th, so my reservations are made. I’ll be arriving Sunday afternoon and I’m in…
Even though I don’t tend to publicly admit it, I do -ology of the sort that attends GSA. So I’d love to be part of the meetup if the others are amenable to the company of a 9 month old Minnow.
I’m not going to GSA… but I’d totally be up for organizing something at AGU.
I’ll be on hand for the whole meeting. The 31st is the Sherlock Holmes dinner, so that’s out for me, but otherwise I’m OK with whatever.
By all means let’s meet for AGU too.
Well, I’m not seeing any movement toward a get-together.
On Saturday I’m attending both the Geoscience Educators reception and the Presidential Address/Awards Ceremony (because I’m a sentimental fool) and maybe I’ll meet some of you. On Sunday I’ll be at the Google Earth Geology session at midday and the Welcome Reception that evening; dinner after that somewhere would be fun if someone knows of a good cheap place to eat.
Ron, I suggest you start a new blog post to serve as a nucleus for a get-together. Monday evening is a possibility too, at least for me.
